Canterbury 大聖堂
캔터베리 교구의 주교좌성당이다.
높이 72m, 길이 160m의 규모.
대성당 중심에 걸려있는 텍스타일 작품은
영국의 직물 예술가이자 직조 디자이너인 마고 셀비(Margo Selby)와
작곡가 헬렌 캐딕(Helen Caddick)이 함께 만든 문랜딩(moon landing)이란 작품으로
올여름 캔터베리 대성당에서 입장객을 위해 기획 전시한 것이다.
1170년 캔터베리 대주교 토마스 베켓(St. Thomas Becket)은
국왕 헨리2세에 의해 죽음을 당한 후 성인으로 시성되어 대성당 트리니티 채플에 묻혔다.
그 후 헨리 8세에 의해 무덤이 파헤쳐지는 수난을 당하기까지 했지만,
지금까지 성공회와 가톨릭 모두의 성인으로 모셔져 캔터베리 대성당은 수많은 순례자가 찾는 성지가 되었다.
초서(Geoffrey Chaucer)의 캔터베리 이야기 (Tales of Canterbury)는
바로 대주교 토마스 베켓(St. Thomas Becket)을 기리는 성지순례자 30여 명의 이야기를 다룬 소설이다.
